Iva Charlot (EYE-va shar-LOW) is small, but solidly built, with flame-red hair and sparkling green eyes. When her hands aren’t holding her infant son, Henri, they’re spinning wool into thread.
She makes careful study of her surroundings, but avoids drawing attention to herself. She speaks plainly, maintaining a calm demeanor.
Iva is descended from Astolpho Charlot, an officer of the army that defeated the dragon cult centuries ago. When the army returned home, Astolpho remained behind to “keep an eye on things.”
Astolpho’s descendants have trained each generation of their family in the martial tradition while maintaining their vigil. The Charlots kept this agenda to themselves; by the time Iva’s father, Mandel, married Galla Mayhew, no one else in Oakhurst remembered the family’s history. To the village at large, Mandel was a humble tinker, and nothing more.
Iva’s parents were the first not to sire any male children, so it fell to her to continue the line. But shortly after Iva’s training ended, the family’s shop burned down, and her father perished in the blaze. With no means to support her family, Galla went to the lord of the land, agreeing to become a scullery maid in his home. The lord also arranged a marriage between Iva and Orson Shepherd.
Now Iva lives on the ranch that will one day belong to Orson. The death of her sister-in-law, Celeine, was a terrible tragedy. The birth of Iva’s son, Henri, brought the family a brief moment of joy – but the boy seems to be cursed.
Iva has come to love Orson, and she dotes on their son. But she has never forgotten her duty to her ancestors, and sneaks off from time to time to practice her skills, and to scout out the rift. Her devotion to the cause of good comes from her mother, whom she misses even more than her late father.
The recent return of Orson’s brother, Aramis, worries Iva. He intends to look for adventurers who disappeared exploring the rift. Perhaps evil has returned after all…
